TRADITION AND INNOVATION

Welcome to Rotllan Torra, a family-run company which elaborates a limited production of high quality wines. Thanks to our daily efforts, we manage to get excellent fruits that, following a complex and laborious elaboration process, turn into a tempting and elegant wine that satisfies the most demanding palates. Please find below a brief summary of our history.

Rotllan Torra is a traditional company located in Torroja del Priorat (in the heart of the Priorat D.O.Q.) and has been elaborating high quality wines for years. We marketed our first bottle in 1984, but the evolution and development of all its departments did not begin to be defined until 1995.

The Balandra, our first winery and home, is the symbol of our company. It used to be a farmhouse-winery built by the Carthusian monks of Scaladei in the 16th Century, and it is located in Torroja del Priorat. The Carthusian monks were the first to use this winery for the elaboration of wine (all the grape from the region has been pressed and fermented in our winery for over three centuries).

With the confiscation of Mendizábal in 1835, the property did not belong to the Church anymore. The new private owners kept working on the wine industry until the end of last century, when the phylloxera pest appeared.

The winery consists of three naves separated by arcades: the central nave is twice bigger than the other two and reminds of the inside of a church. It faces north, and a nearby natural mine keeps a constant and perfect humidity and temperature for the preservation of wine during the whole year.

Moreover, part of the winery is underground.

Nowadays, the building consists of three floors:

1st Floor (500 sq m) - stainless steel tanks to ferment the musts and vinificate, and bottle rack (with a capacity of 150,000 bottles).
2nd Floor (500 sq m) - tasting rooms, offices, laboratories and restaurant for customers.
3rd Floor (475 sq m) - park of casks (French oak, American oak, etc.)

The roof is provided with a special insulator which maintains a constant temperature during the whole year.

Second winery:

The bottling plant, i.e. the production and logistics departments, is located in this second winery (2,000 sq m), recently acquired and restored by Rotllan Torra.

Our company combines traditional craftsmanship and up-to-date wine techniques in all its processes (harvest, vinification, elaboration, aging, production and quality control). That is why we are considered one of the leading companies in the elaboration of high quality wines.

Built in 1934 by all the members of the Torroja del Priorat Cooperative, the building has been recently acquired by Rotllan Torra and houses our Production and Logistics Departments. This helps us offer a greater service to our clients and improve the quality of our wines.

Although we have the necessary structure to increase our production, we prefer to improve the quality of our wines, and that’s why our production is limited. In order to assure the production of wine, we acquire new lands almost every year.

Nowadays, Rotllan Torra owns 24 hectares of vineyard of over 70-year-old vineyards and young vineyards in terraces with different varieties of grape (Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc) in Torroja’s area.

Moreover, we have 60 hectares of vineyards controlled by 40 grape producers, which assures our grape supply every single year.

This allows us to perform an exhaustive control of the vineyard during the whole year and the different grape growth stages. When the harvest period comes, Rotllan Torra determines on site the perfect moment for the picking.

Although Rotllan Torra runs a traditional method of wine elaboration, from the marketing of Amadís and Tirant, our goal is to innovate and constantly research in order to obtain the maximum quality.

From our point of view, our work is not finished until the final consumer tastes our wines. That’s why our main objective is taking care of the wine and we place a great deal of importance in our customer service department.
